THE MORAL PURITY BRIGADE

Many years ago during a prom night at a hotel (in the Orchard area but I cannot recall the name), a school leader was mortified when she discovered that there was a massage parlour near the ballroom where our school was having our prom night.

Fearing for the moral purity of our students, the school leader mobilised some teachers to stand guard near the hotel entrance so that the students would not “stray” into the massage parlour. So we stood guard there and directed the students to the venue of moral purity.

This was one of the most absurd “duties” I ever performed as a teacher. First of all, I think the hotel’s massage parlour was above the students’ budget and secondly, it was a massage parlour in a hotel and not a brothel.

Thirdly, it was quite unlikely that students would just abandon prom to go get a massage!

The school leader was kind and 德高望重. I respect her a lot, but in this instance, we should not have been so alarmist.
