My very first CCA as a teacher was Basketball Girls. The teacher-in-charge was a female teacher who was on the verge of retirement. She had been in the school for over thirty years and was more accustomed to leading boys.
On the very first game that I accompanied them, we went to Clementi Stadium. I cannot recall what school we played but the girls were defeated. One of them cried.
My colleague berated the girl harshly: "Why do you cry? Only weaklings cry! The strong will never cry!" (只有弱者才会哭,强者是不会哭的)
She turned to me and said: "Now you know why I don't like to take girls. They are all emotionally unstable!"
This colleague was from that era when teachers cared little about the feelings of students. Some people might romanticise it to say that those from such a generation were "tougher", but I completely disagree.
It is not a sign of toughness to harshly invalidate someone's emotions, especially when it was justified (defeat). It is cruelty and how can cruelty ever be considered "good"?
Of course the other extreme is to pander to every emotional whim of a child.
