NEGATIVE DEMONSTRATION

More than a Chinese zodiac cycle ago, two Sec 4 female students from my form class came to complain. A young female teacher who was delegated to look into discipline had caught them for skirts that were deemed to be too short and wanted to take photos (without showing their faces) to be used for "negative demonstration" slides about attire.

I felt this was absurd. I told the two girls. "If you do not want your photograph to be taken, just tell her (the teacher) that you don't want to take. "Then I added, "Say Mr. Lee say one."

The two girls really went to say that! My colleague was not pleased and we had a tense exchange of words which I shall sum up thus: She said I should have checked with her. I said what she did was not prudent.

Maybe this is "woke" but I believe students have human rights. Taking a photo of a student's skirt + legs without her consent is not cool. If you want to take a photo, why not take a positive demonstration?

Anyway, I cannot recall if the negative demonstration images were eventually taken. In today's climate, I highly doubt that any teacher would even think of doing such a courageous thing. This was from a different era...
